Battle for America

By Michele Duffy, guest blogger

As the storm clouds gathered across many lands,
America would be safe from the virus at hand.
Ignoring the warnings, declaring it’s fake,
sitting on the sidelines was the approach to take.

Only one case is what we were told,
soon becoming fifteen and continuing to grow.
No need to worry, it’s under control,
when summer arrives, the virus will go.

Mitigation and testing scientists advised,
our leader preferred to continue the lies.
No need to wear masks, let’s open the schools,
the economy is sinking, his reelection is doomed.

As the virus hit red states, he became more involved,
forgoing a mask and directing the show.
His ratings kept falling as the death toll did rise,
kept denying the facts and telling more lies.

A wartime president is what he assumed
with an army of cohorts singing his tune
and marching beside their babbling baffoon
pretending they won as Covid still loomed.

The temperature’s rising as elections draw near
his rallies foretelling the chaos and fear.
Rejecting the ballots counted that night
declaring himself President ready to fight.

The lawyers will profit as state battles begin
from low courts to high courts until the Supreme.
Remember the lies and danger he brewed,
let’s hope all’s not lost for the America we knew.
